Wrongful Death Caused by Traffic Light

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed last year in Boone County alleging that a traffic light at an intersection malfunctioned, leading to a deadly crash. Lois Papen, 41, was traveling west on Chapel Hill Road in May when she entered the intersection at Forum Boulevard. Her vehicle collided with another vehicle driven by 31-year-old Stephanie Hummel. Papen was later pronounced dead at University Hospital. The city claims it was the driver’s own negligence – not an allegedly faulty traffic light. They claim that Papen was not keeping “a careful lookout” and did not “use the highest degree of care” in the moments before the crash.
