Vioxx Cases Flood Court

A request for additional staff at the Atlantic City court responsible for handling around 14,000 Vioxx-related lawsuits has been approved by the state administrative office of courts. The Atlantic County Civil Division is trying to effectively maintain proceedings on the thousands of suits against pharmaceutical company Merck, who pulled anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx from the market in 2004 after research showed the drug doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke if used for over 18 months. Civil division manager Teresa Ungaro says, "You have to remember we still keep our focus on the different matters ” landlord-tenant disputes, malpractice cases. There is a balancing act at all times." Ungaro adds that her employees are adjusting to the extra work, and that officials "just had to re-jigger the budget. They are being very creative." The majority of Vioxx cases are being heard in Atlantic City as Merck is based in New Jersey. Superior Court Judge Carol Higbee will preside.
