School Ordered to Pay $1.8 Million in Dog Bite Case

$1.8 million has been awarded to the parents of a boy badly mauled by a dog at Ridgewood Elementary School in 2003. The Orange County School Board was ordered by the Florida Senate to pay this amount to Desnar and Mignone Decembre after their 8-year-old son, Daniel, was severely injured while awaiting an afternoon tutoring class on the school grounds. A 50-pound dog, which lived next door to the school, raced onto the school playground and attacked Daniel as he tried to flee. Before teachers and other passersby separated the child from the dog, Daniel was badly bitten on the eyelids, cheeks and chin, lost much of his right ear and later had to have his left ear amputated.
