Police Face Lawsuit Over Prisoner Suicide

The family of a man who committed suicide while in a jail cell is filing a wrongful death suit against four New Haven judicial marshals, their supervisor and the state of Connecticut. Daniel Riley, 46, died in a jail cell at the New Haven Police Department after making a noose out of his socks (APR05). The incident led to several judicial marshals being fired. The lawsuit is accusing marshals of failing in their responsibility to provide "a safe and secure environment in an impartial, courteous and professional manner." According to Joseph D'Alesio, executive director of operations, around 10 policies and rules were violated by each of the marshals, including sleeping on duty and failing to respond to "radio calls or activated panic buttons, signals or signs of distress."
