Nursing Home Fined $12,000 by State
St. Anthony’s Nursing and Rehabilitation was fined $12,000 for failure to monitor a resident who sexually abused one woman and was found an hour later fondling another. He also made sexually inappropriate comments to staff members, state officials said, and was combative when staff attempted to redirect him, including hitting, pushing, scratching, spitting, throwing water on and urinating on staff. However, Keith Hufsey, assistant director of operations for the facility, said the state is giving only one side of the story. The 97-year-old man with a debilitating brain disease was confined to a wheelchair and had cataracts. He was attempting to find the head of the bed and the foot of the bed in a room that was not his, Hufsey said. “It’s absolutely a tragedy that public health did this,†he said. “The state of Illinois is broke. They are going after the nursing homes, and it was our turn.â€
