Nursing Home Abuse Suit Settled

A nursing home has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $500,000 in the case of a 79-year-old resident who died as a result of their alleged negligence. The woman fell out of her wheelchair head-first while going down a ramp. The on-call physician prescribed narcotics for the pain, but despite complaining of neck, back and shoulder pain, no further examination was conducted. The patient continued to suffer from pain the next day, but the home still refused further tests. Finally the resident was transferred to a hospital for a CT scan after the insistence of her family members. The scan revealed a C5 neck fracture, and the resident died of complications arising from the injury a few days later. The wrongful death lawsuit alleged that the nursing home, nursing administrator, director of nursing, primary and on-call physicians failed to respond to the resident's symptoms in a timely manner and caused her death as a result.
