New Data Released on Naproxen

The debate on the safety of two painkillers has started afresh after new data was released from a trial halted in 2004 for safety reasons. According to the trial, painkiller Aleve holds a high risk of heart attacks for consumers, while painkiller Celebrex is safe. But Dr Steven Nissen, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation says this early data is unreliable. He says, "The trial was improperly stopped by what appears to be political considerations. When you do that, you generate data which we know is unreliable." Nissen claims that the trials were stopped because of nervous officials who were worried about media attention on controversial anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx.
