Merck Wins Latest Vioxx suit

Pharmaceutical company Merck have won the latest personal injury suit regarding controversial painkiller Vioxx after a jury decided that the drug was not responsible for Charles Laron Mason's heart attack. Mason, who had used Vioxx for over ten months, admitted that he had stopped taking the anti-inflammatory drug a few days before his heart attack in July 2003. Merck lawyers claimed that once Vioxx was out of the system, it could have no possible negative effect. A doctor also testified that the blood clot that caused Mason's heart attack was a result of plaque build-up in his arteries rather than Vioxx. Executive vice president and general counsel of Merck Kenneth C. Frazier said, "This is a satisfying verdict for Merck."
