Menactra Can Cause Guillain Barre

The FDA and CDC have updated an October (05) alert following reports of Guillain Barre (GBS) connected to the vaccine Menactra Meningococcal Conjugate A, C, Y and W135 from manufacturers Sanofi Pasteur. Five cases of GBS were reported after use of the vaccine in 2005, out of a total of 15 cases among 11-19 year olds and two cases among the over-20's reported. GBS causes the body's immune system to attack parts of the peripheral nervous system. The disorder leads to paralysis from which patients may recover over a period of weeks, months or years. There is no known cure for GBS. The vaccine Menactra prevents meningococcal disease which affects around 100,000 people aged 11-19 each year and can be life threatening.
