Man Jailed for Hit-And-Run Police Death

A man has been sentenced to four years in prison after killing a California Highway Patrol Officer in a hit-and-run (05AUG06). Judge C. Don Clay handed the maximum sentence of four years in state prison to Russell David Rodrigues for causing the death of CHP Officer Brent Clearman. Clearman died when Rodrigues' car crashed into his, causing him to be thrown 100 feet. Rodrigues then drove to his girlfriend's house and hid the car. Rodrigues pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run for killing Clearman, and will be sent to San Quentin State Prison for 45 days, then to another California state prison to serve his term. He has also been ordered to pay more than $14,000 in court fines and restitution. Clearman's widow Cathy says, "My heart has been broken. I still can't sleep at night knowing Brent will never lie next to me again. (Life) will never be normal and it will never be the same."
