Hit-And-Run Driver In Wrongful Death Suit

The son of a woman killed in a hit-and-run accident last year (05) is filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Harrison Yonts, Murray State's Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Nick's Family Sports Pub. Abdalla El Bannan's 62-year-old mother Nadia Shaheen was walking home from class last November (11NOV05) when Yonts crashed into her. Shaheen died as a result of the injuries she suffered. El Bannan, who filed the wrongful death lawsuit on Tuesday (17OCT06) in the U.S. District Court, is seeking more than $75,000 in damages. According to the complaint, the then-20-year-old Yonts was intoxicated after consuming alcohol at both Nick's Family Sports Pub and at the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house. Yonts, the son of state Rep. Brent Yonts, was arrested by Murray Police Department officers for manslaughter on the afternoon of the fatal hit-and-run. Yonts was then indicted for the more serious murder charge by a grand jury in January (06). The complaint says, "Yonts recognized the seriousness of Nadia Shaheen's injuries but failed to summon emergency medical help for her. Instead, Yonts tried to conceal his wrongful acts and then fled the scene of the crime, leaving Nadia Shaheen to suffer and then die mercilessly."
