Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested After High-Speed Chase

A man in Manteca, California was arrested after police officers saw him run over an elderly lady in a wheelchair scooter before speeding off (15NOV06). The two off-duty reserve police officers alerted other local police, and soon 18-year-old Andy A. Alvarez found himself in a high-speed chase with police through the city streets and Interstate 5, as well as a footrace in the parking lot of San Joaquin General Hospital. Alvarez was caught and arrested, and was charged with numerous crimes including felony hit-and-run with injury, felony pursuit, possession of a stolen vehicle, cruelty to a child and being an unlicensed driver. Bail has been set at $92,000.
