GlaxoSmithKline Make $63 Million Paxil Settlement

GlaxoSmithKline PLC will pay $63.8 million settlement in a lawsuit accusing the company of encouraging children and adolescents to use antidepressant drug Paxil while deliberately covering up information concerning the medication's safety and effectiveness. GlaxoSmithKline denies the claims but is eager to resolve the matter in order to avoid further legal costs. Actual consumer payments depend on the number of claims - plaintiffs may only get a small part of the amount they might otherwise have got if there is not enough money to pay all the claims. The settlement was approved by Madison County Associate Judge Ralph Mendelsohn on October 6 2006 and unsealed on October 27 2006. A hearing will be held in March (09MAR06) to determine if the settlement is just.
