Dogs' Owners Could Lose First Bite Loophole

As crazy as it may sound, under Texas law, a dog and its owner get “one free bite.” That’s right, no matter how hard or little the dog bite may be the dog gets to live and the owner doesn’t face any criminal charges if the dog has not previously bitten anyone. Robert Jones, having personal experience, is not too happy with this law. Right outside his home is the reminder that his 10-year-old daughter, Amber, was mauled to death last month between her home and the home where a pit bull resides. State Sen. Jeff Wentworth has proposed legislation that would criminalize dog owners, possibly with a felony, for the first time a dog bites anyone. Under the Wentworth's plan, the dog would be destroyed. Animal Care Services agrees with him.
