Bayer Denies Negligence in Rice Suit

Geeridge Farm Incorporated and George G. Watson of Earle have filed negligence lawsuits against Bayer CropScience LP after the government announced the genetically modified rice had been found in US long-grain rice supplies (AUG06). In a response filed today to several suits filed by rice growers, Bayer denies denied marketing the rice to farmers, but admits that they have developed genetically modified rice. The lawsuits, which were centered on the long-grain rice LL-RICE-601, were filed after trace amounts of unapproved, genetically engineered rice were discovered in long-grain rice in Arkansas and Missouri. Japan banned certain strains of American rice as a result, causing harvested rice prices to have plunge.
