$856,000 Awarded in Dog Attack Case

A mother and her 2 ½-year-old son who were bitten by a Rottweiler on the beach have been awarded $856,000 by a Hawaii Circuit Court jury. The jury found dog owner Mariko Bereday negligent for failing to keep her dog on a leash at Kahala Beach on Mother’s Day in 2005. The dog wouldn’t get off the boy until a former University of Hawaii football player punched him in the head. Bereday denied that her dog bit the boy and said afterward that photos of his injuries were faked. She said she plans to appeal.
