$21 Million Awarded in Wrongful Death

A $21 million judgment was awarded to the parents of a young man who was fatally stabbed near Irvin High School in 2004 in a wrongful death lawsuit. Jacob Luis Ortiz was found liable in the death of 19-year-old Hector Hugo Juarez Jr. Attorney David J. Kimmelman said the large monetary judgment was likely not collectible because Ortiz does not have money, but the Juarez family hopes the civil court's decision prompts a second look at the criminal case from the District Attorney's Office. The jury in the civil case declared Ortiz did not act in self-defense, and that the harm to Juarez was due to malice, court documents stated.
