$20 Million Awarded in Medical Malpractice Suit

A jury in Pennsylvania has awarded $20 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit to a six-year-old boy who went blind after birth due to hospital negligence. The boy was born prematurely, and developed retinopathy of prematurity, common in babies who are born prematurely. Despite being aware of the baby's condition, the hospital discharged the child without giving the parents advice on the urgent nature of his eye condition. No instructions were given on the importance of taking the child to a specialist as soon as possible. By the time the parents finally took the baby to a specialist, he was already blind. Those named as responsible in the suit include the hospital, the head of the neonatology unit, the hospital's pediatric opthalmologist, and the child's pediatrician.
